Diesel reins as Stagecoach confirms 2017/18 fleet order for 344 vehicles

Stagecoach Group has announced orders for 344 new vehicles worth £70million with Alexander Dennis claiming the lion’s share with 224 complete vehicles and 90 bodies. Scania is also a significant winner since Stagecoach has split its order for double-deck buses with 122 complete ADL vehicles and 59 with ADL bodies on Scania chassis.

Significantly, despite current interest in alternative fuels and electric drivetrains, all of the Stagecoach order is for Euro 6 diesel-powered vehicles.

The latest order takes the group’s investment to around £1billion for around 7,000 new vehicles over the past 11 years.

The new buses and coaches will be introduced in Stagecoach’s regional networks in England, Scotland and Wales, as well as on the its megabus.com network in the UK.

Almost half of the new vehicles meet the Low Carbon Emission Bus specification, according to Stagecoach, while around two thirds feature stop-start technology.

The first of the new vehicles are due to be delivered from spring 2017.

These latest vehicle orders are an important part of our strategy to encourage even more people to take the bus.

“Local bus services are the backbone of the country’s transport networks. However, the increasing problem of traffic congestion in our towns and cities is holding buses back and it is high time our politicians stepped up and took action to support bus passengers and free up road space to help bus networks flourish.”
