First Scotland East director chalks up 30 years

First Scotland East/Midland Bluebird has honoured one of its senior members of staff who is celebrating 30 years in the bus industry. John Gorman started as a bus driver 30 years ago and has worked his way up to his current role as business director. Gorman started as a driver in 1986 with Eastern Scottish at the Edinburgh New Street bus depot before transferring to Livingston depot. He moved to Midland Scottish’s Linlithgow depot in 1991 and progressed in various positions including depot controller, forward allocator, depot inspector and traffic supervisor.

He was promoted to operations manager for Bannockburn and Balfron depots in 2003 and later became assistant operations director for Midland Bluebird and First Scotland East in 2009. In 2010 he was promoted to operations director and his role then changed to business director.

“It really does feel like yesterday that I first started at New Street in Edinburgh,” says Gorman. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these 30 years in the industry and have had the pleasure of working with wonderful colleagues.

“I’m passionate about the company and although we’ve been through a lot of changes – and not all of those have been easy – we are going forward and making this company sustainable for the future.”

Managing director Paul McGowan adds: “John has an exemplary record and is a great role model for anyone in the industry. He started as a driver and has worked his way up through the business at various companies and locations including Linlithgow, Carmuirs, Bannockburn and Livingston.

“You can always rely on John to get the job done and he is a wonderful people person. His heart is with First Scotland East/Midland Bluebird and he has provided me with tremendous support over the years.”
