Research into fire suppression systems

Research into fire suppression systems Research into fire suppression systems
Transport for London has commissioned a study into the effectiveness of bus fire suppression systems. The research will be conducted by Sweden-based SP Technical Research Institute which will review all recent fire incidents in TfL buses with installed suppression systems and help provide recommendations on updated system specification.

SP Fire Technology has been conducting research into bus fire safety since 2004, supported by the Swedish and Norwegian road administrations.

In 2010 SP developed a fire test standard for active fire suppression systems in bus engine compartments. An engine compartment mock-up has been built and used to examine the impact of various parameters. Recently SP extended this work to include the development of a standard related to detection capabilities for different detection systems.

SP Technical Research Institute is owned by the Swedish Government and is the national institute for technical evaluation, research, testing, certification, metrology and calibration, and is working closely with large and small companies, universities, institutes of technology and other organisations. It has around 1,200 employees and an annual turnover of approximately 1,200 million SEK.
